How to choose sailing footwear – a practical guide from P&B

What sailing footwear do you need? The short answer: a shoe or boot with a non-marking sole that grips wet surfaces, protects your feet, and suits the way you sail. Grip and protection are the baseline for every sailor. After that, the right choice comes down to how physically demanding your sailing is, your preference for flexibility versus support, and the water temperature you're sailing in.

Most sailing footwear guides stop at non-marking soles and quick-dry materials. Those things matter, but they're the starting point – the baseline that every shoe and boot in the P&B range meets. The more useful question is what else you need, and that's where it gets personal.

How you sail determines what your feet need

Flexibility is the priority for some sailors. Feeling pressure through the foot, reading the deck, staying low-profile – Zhik's race shoes and aqua shoes are built for this. Light, fast-draining and minimal between foot and deck, they suit sailors who want maximum connection with the boat. Zhik's Fuze and Surge are the standout options in this space, both designed with integrated drainage and non-marking soles.

Others need more structure. Arch support reduces fatigue on longer sessions. Ankle support helps stability through physical manoeuvres. Zhik's Hiking X Boot – with its 3D knitted sock construction, ZhikGrip II panel and Michelin Fibrelite outsole – is built specifically for sailors who hike hard and need the boot to hold its performance throughout. Gill's neoprene sailing boots with structured ankle construction offer a similar level of support for dinghy and keelboat sailors who want durability across a full UK season.

Thermal rating and waterproof sailing footwear

Water temperature changes what you need from your sailing boots. A lightweight aqua shoe or sailing race shoe works well from late spring through summer. Through autumn and into winter, neoprene thickness becomes the key variable – Gill's sailing boot range covers varying thicknesses for different temperature bands, from 3mm through to heavier cold-water options.

For offshore sailing and serious passage-making, neoprene alone isn't enough. Dubarry's offshore yachting boots use waterproof leather construction with full Goretex lining – providing insulation, weather protection and durability that no neoprene boot matches over extended periods on deck. These are sailing boots built for sailors who spend hours in deteriorating conditions, where foot protection and warmth are safety considerations as much as comfort ones.

Deck shoes, marine footwear and on-shore crossover

Not all sailing footwear needs to perform in extreme conditions. For keelboat racing, club sailing and time spent around the water, a good deck shoe covers both on-board and ashore use without compromise. SLAM's OD Shoe is built specifically for one-design keelboat racing – Vibram non-marking sole, ultralight technical mesh upper, gusseted tongue and an internal structure that locks the foot in place when sailing heeled. Musto adds technical sailing shoes suited to keelboat and yacht sailors who want a shoe rather than a boot.

Orca Bay's handcrafted leather deck shoes sit at the other end of the spectrum – classic moccasin construction, premium oiled nubuck and pull-up leathers, razor-cut non-marking soles. Made individually by skilled craftsmen, they're the choice for sailors who want footwear that transitions from pontoon to prize-giving without looking out of place in either setting.
