Choosing the Right Sailing Drysuit

Selecting a drysuit involves balancing several factors: your sailing style, the conditions you'll face, your budget, and how the suit fits your body. Understanding these considerations helps you find a drysuit that performs reliably across seasons of hard use.

Drysuit Entry Systems Explained

Modern drysuits use different entry systems, each with distinct advantages. Front-entry designs feature a diagonal zip across the chest, making it possible to get in and out independently. These suit sailors who rig and launch without crew assistance.

Rear-entry drysuits place the zip across the back, which can provide a cleaner front profile and potentially fewer leak points in high-wear areas. However, they typically require help to close properly. Some newer designs, like the Gill Verso women's drysuit, combine rear entry with drop-seat functionality for added convenience.

The zip itself represents a significant engineering challenge – it must remain completely watertight under pressure while still operating smoothly. Premium suits use metal YKK Aquaseal or similar quality zips that maintain their seal integrity over years of use.

Seal Types and Fit

Neck and wrist seals come in two main materials: latex and neoprene. Latex seals create an exceptionally tight barrier against water ingress. They're trimmed to fit your specific neck and wrist circumference – most suits arrive with seals sized generously, intended for careful trimming. Cut too much and you'll compromise the seal; cut too little and comfort suffers.

Neoprene seals, sometimes called glideskin, offer greater comfort and durability. They're less prone to tearing than latex and don't degrade as quickly with UV exposure. However, they may allow slightly more moisture transfer in extreme conditions. Many sailors find the comfort trade-off worthwhile for regular club sailing.

Pre-marked seals, found on suits like the Gill Pro Drysuit, include cutting guides that help you achieve correct sizing without guesswork.

Fabric Technology and Breathability

Drysuit fabrics must achieve two seemingly contradictory goals: complete waterproofing from outside while allowing moisture vapour to escape from within. Without breathability, condensation builds inside the suit, leaving you damp despite the waterproof barrier.

Entry-level suits typically use 2 or 3-layer constructions with adequate breathability for most sailing. Higher-specification suits employ advanced laminates – Musto's MPX range uses Gore-Tex Pro for exceptional moisture transfer during high-exertion sailing.

The number of layers refers to the fabric construction: outer face fabric, waterproof-breathable membrane, and inner lining. More layers generally mean greater durability and comfort against the skin, though also increased weight and cost.

Reinforcement and Durability

Sailing drysuits endure significant abrasion. Hiking out loads the seat and backs of thighs against the gunwale. Kneeling to adjust controls grinds knees against deck surfaces. Moving around the boat creates friction at multiple contact points.

Quality drysuits address this with reinforced panels – typically Cordura or similar abrasion-resistant materials – at the seat, knees, and sometimes elbows. These patches dramatically extend suit life compared to single-layer construction throughout.

Seam construction also affects longevity. Fully taped seams prevent water ingress and reduce the stress concentration that causes seam failures. The best suits combine taping with reinforced stitching at high-stress points.

Layering Under Your Drysuit

Since drysuits provide no insulation, what you wear underneath determines your warmth. The layering system follows outdoor clothing principles: moisture-wicking base layer against skin, insulating mid-layer, with the drysuit as your outer shell.

Base layers should fit close to the body without restriction. Synthetic materials or merino wool wick moisture away from skin, preventing the clammy feeling that comes from sweat accumulation. Avoid cotton, which absorbs moisture and loses insulating properties when damp.

Mid-layers add warmth. Fleece undersuits designed specifically for drysuits work well – some drysuits include matched undersuits as package deals.

Adjust your layering to conditions and activity level. Racing generates body heat; a heavy mid-layer that felt perfect during rigging may leave you overheating on the first beat. Conversely, long-distance sailing with periods of inactivity demands more insulation than you might expect.

Drysuit Care and Maintenance

Proper care dramatically extends drysuit life. Rinse the suit with fresh water after every use, paying particular attention to seals and zip. Salt crystals and grit accelerate seal degradation and can damage zip mechanisms.

Store your drysuit hanging or loosely rolled, away from direct sunlight. UV exposure degrades latex seals and can affect fabric coatings over time. Avoid folding along the same creases repeatedly, which stresses the waterproof membrane.

Latex seals benefit from occasional treatment with seal conditioner, keeping them supple rather than brittle. Inspect seals regularly for cracks or thinning – replacing seals before they fail completely is far preferable to discovering the problem mid-sail.

Zips require lubrication with appropriate wax or silicone-based lubricant. Never force a stiff zip; work lubricant into the teeth and operate the slider gently until it moves freely.

When to Choose a Drysuit Over a Wetsuit

The drysuit versus wetsuit decision depends on your sailing conditions and personal cold tolerance. Drysuits excel in cold air temperatures, cold water, and situations where you may not be continuously active.

Winter sailing almost always favours drysuits. Water temperatures in UK waters drop significantly through winter, and air temperatures can make wetsuit sailing genuinely uncomfortable between races or during lighter wind days.

Spring and autumn represent the crossover period where either option works. Active dinghy racing in moderate conditions might suit a wetsuit with spray top. Longer sailing days, cruising, or conditions with significant wind chill may favour the adaptable layering options a drysuit provides.

Summer rarely requires drysuits in UK waters, though they remain useful for early morning sessions, evening sailing, and cold snaps.

Junior and Youth Drysuits

Young sailors benefit enormously from proper drysuits. Children lose body heat faster than adults and often lack the awareness to recognise when they're getting dangerously cold. A quality junior drysuit keeps them comfortable through longer training sessions and allows year-round sailing.

Youth drysuits from brands like Gill, Musto and Zhik scale down adult features appropriately. Reinforced knees and seats remain essential – juniors are often harder on kit than adults.

Fit matters particularly for young sailors. A drysuit with room to grow sounds economical but compromises both seal effectiveness and mobility. Buy for current fit and accept that growing children will need replacement suits.

Finding the Right Fit

Drysuit sizing differs from standard clothing sizes. The suit must accommodate your body plus whatever layering you'll wear underneath, while still allowing seals to sit correctly against skin.

Measure carefully and consult brand-specific size guides – sizing varies significantly between manufacturers. If you're between sizes, consider your typical layering: heavy winter use might favour sizing up, while active racing with minimal layers could work better in the smaller option.
