SailKote is an easy to apply, high-tech, high performance dry lubricant for anything that that moves on your boat - sails, hulls, rigging, deck hardware, and more. Use it on anything that you want to run smoother, work more efficiently, and last longer.
A translucent liquid that sprays or wipes on, SailKote completely dries in seconds to a hard, ultra-slick, hydrophobic dry coating that bonds tenaciously to almost any surface. It does not attract dirt, water and contaminants that eventually degrade performance - unlike oils, silicones, and waxes. In addition, it will not transfer to other surfaces or to you.
World-class sailors and recreational boaters alike find that using SailKote’s advanced dry lubrication technology improves their performance. This same dry lubricant technology has been used by America’s Cup teams, Olympic Medalists, and One Design world champions.
SailKote is 5x more effective, and lasts much longer, than wax or oil-based lubricants.
Apply to clean, dry surfaces. Shake vigorously before use. Apply 1 to 2 thin, uniform coats. Reapply if necessary.
Aerosol: Shake vigorously before use (1-minute). Hold can 25-30cm from surface. Press nozzle, spray 1 to 2 thin, even coatings. Reapply as needed.
For best results, apply SailKote by spraying on your sails rather than wiping it on using a cloth rag or sponge. We recommend using a HVLP (high volume, low pressure) paint sprayer.
Sail Application Guidelines:
Sails should be laid out on a clean, flat surface (for example, a sail loft floor) in an area with little or no wind; make sure there is lots of ventilation
Wear a mask whenever paint sprayers are in use
Sails / spinnakers must be clean and dry in order for SailKote to adhere properly
Spinnakers – apply a very light coating on each side
Multi-layered corners require more coverage—try 3–4 coats on each side.
Apply light coating over any inked on numbers or logos because a heavy coat may cause them to run slightly or bleed
Keep spray nozzle approximately 1.5 to 2 feet from the cloth
Sail should only appear wet for about 5–15 seconds. If the sail never actually appears wet, then you may not have used enough SailKote, or it may be drying prior to contact and fail to adhere properly. If the sail stays wet for more than 15 seconds or takes on a slightly opaque coating, the coating is being applied too heavily. Coating should never be applied so heavily that it might drip or run
Using the guidelines above, a Mumm-36 spinnaker takes about 10 minutes per side to spray and uses approximately 2 quarts of SailKote
After spraying is complete, clean the sprayer’s nozzle by spraying acetone through it for 30 seconds or more
Spinnakers - Benefits of Coating with SailKote:
If properly applied, SailKote may last more than 100 spinnaker sets - generally, that is more than an entire season
Minimize water absorption - keeps spinnaker as light as possible
Minimize friction when hoisting and dousing spinnakers, and gybing asymmetrical spinnakers
Helps prevent tearing cloth on sharp objects
Minimize mildew growth.
Headsails - Benefits of Coating with SailKote:
Minimize friction when tacking - friction caused by overlapped headsail rubbing against mast and shrouds is the main cause of the breakdown the sailcloth and laminates
Minimize water absorption - keeps headsails as light as possible
Reduce friction when hoisting headsail by coating luff tape or hanks of sail; for maximum benefit, coat both sides of headsail entirely during peel changes
Helps prevent tearing cloth or laminate on spreader tips and sharp objects
Keeps telltales sensitive and flying in wet conditions
When properly applied, SailKote will last an entire season under normal conditions.
Equipment Application Guidelines:
Spray Application: spray on a thin, even coating - avoid drips and runs
Wipe Application: use a soft, absorbent, cotton cloth or a small-cell sponge and apply in one even coat with gentle, even pressure in the streamline direction
After the first coating is dry, apply a second coat to ensure complete coverage
Mask off any areas that you do not want coated - SailKote is extremely slippery
SailKote dries to a hard film in a matter of seconds - equipment can be used immediately thereafter
SAILKOTE CRUISING APPLICATION GUIDE:
Below are examples of how to apply SailKote. Use it where indicated to see the improvement in your boat’s performance.
Battens and Batten Pockets Apply to full-length battens to help them to slide in and out easily. Minimizes friction during tacks and jibes and helps the sail to fill quickly and easily.
Mainsail Track Makes raising and lowering the main much easier in all conditions. SailKote will not attract dirt and contaminants that foul the track. Reefing under load is almost effortless.
Standing Rigging Apply to all standing rigging—minimizes sail chafe and friction; Tacks and jibes are easier and more efficient.
Blocks Blocks stay corrosion free and lubricated for exceptionally easy and reliable operation.
Hatches / Companion Way Tracks Spray hatches and companion way tracks to prevent corrosion and reduce friction.
Travelers and Cars Keep travelers and cars moving smoothly while preventing corrosion free. Ball bearings will not gum up and will not attract dirt and grime.
Mechanical Instruments Improve longevity and accuracy of instruments—wind speed, direction and knot indicators.
Headsails Keeps headsails and spinnakers dry and friction free. Minimizes friction from rubbing during tacks and jibes, maximizes sail life, and helps to maintain sail shape.
Mast / Spreaders Apply to the mast and spreaders—reduces headsail to mast friction during tacks and gybes.
Telltales Prevent sticking to sails even when wet.
Jib Furling Gear Lubricates and protects jib furling gear without gumming up—increases longevity and reduces friction.
Displacement & Planing Hulls Hull will stay cleaner at the waterline and reduce drag. Marine growth and waterborne contaminants find it difficult to adhere to the slick, hard, non-porous coating.
Keels / Centerboards & Rudders Helps shed kelp and seaweed more easily, and helps maintain laminar flow. Raising and lowering daggerboards and centerboards nearly effortless.
Tiller Head / Pintles & Steering Hardware Prevents corrosion and increases tiller sensitivity by reducing friction.
